Football and Cabernet
Joe and Jennifer Montana live with their four children in the wine country of Calistoga, CA. Shortly after Joe’s retirement from the 49ers, the Montanas began growing wine grapes. Jennifer got Joe interested in wine when she introduced him to a Robert Mondavi 1979 reserve cabernet, and he’s been hooked ever since.
Now Joe has collaborated with Beringer’s Ed Sbragia to produce Cabernet Sauvignon Montagia.
The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Montagia, exhibits a dark ruby/purple color in addition to a big, sweet nose of pain grille, espresso roast, chocolate, and cassis. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc from four of the Private Reserve vineyards that Beringer uses for their top cuvee is an improvement over the 2000. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet notes of licorice, plums, black currants, flowers, and smoke. There is plenty of new oak in the mouth as well as outstanding density and ripeness, and a long, heady finish. It requires another Drink now and will age for 10 plus years. James Laub of Wine Spectator gave it an 88. $70
